Core interests

The exact place of birth is unknown: perhaps Miletus or Abdera . Some researchers believe that one of his teachers was Zeno of Elea [1] . Very little is known about Leucippus's life, and no works have been preserved that could be confidently called Leucippus' works, especially given the fact that Leucippus is in the shadow of his student Democritus, the creator of the completed atomic system. It is possible that Leucippus limited himself only to an oral presentation of his teachings. [2] It is not even possible to determine in which areas Leucippus and Democritus disagreed with each other.

Leucippus probably lived in Abdera - in the same place as Democritus. Simultaneously with Zeno , Empedocles and Anaxagoras, he put forward the idea of the multiplicity of the elements of existence. Adhering to the idea of Parmenides on the immutability and qualitative homogeneity of things, Leucippus, to explain the variety of objects, claims the existence of relative non-existence, that is, the presence of a void that divides everything that exists into many elements. The properties of these elements depend on the empty space that limits them, they differ in size, shape, movement, but all elements are thought of as homogeneous, continuous and therefore indivisible (atomoi). Following the philosophers of the Ionian school (primarily the Miletian ), Leucippus considers the movement to be intrinsic to atoms. [3]

Apparently, Leucippus made a certain contribution to the development of the ideas of Democritus about atomistic cosmology. Works of Leucippus and Democritus already in the IV century BC. e. were combined and later named " Corpus Democriteuin ." [2]

Some researchers doubt the historicity of Leucippus [4] . There was even a theory that Leucippus was the name of the young Democritus, but it was disproved by such scholars as Diels , Zeller and Makovelsky [5] .

Memory

In 1970, the International Astronomical Union named Leucippus a crater on the far side of the moon .
