Length - 2364 kilometers (the sixth in the United States, the second longest tributary of the Mississippi after Missouri ). It originates in the Rockies [4] [5] in Lake County near Ledville , Colorado . It falls into Mississippi near the ghost town of , described by Mark Twain in Life on the Mississippi. The basin area is 505 thousand km², the average water consumption is 240 m³ / s. Mississippi's third tributary after Missouri and Ohio .

The first about 200 km in the Rocky Mountains, the river has a pronounced mountain character. Rafting is possible in several places of the river in spring and summer. This section ends with the Royal Gorge , a canyon 15 kilometers long, 15 meters wide at its narrowest point, and about 400 meters deep. Beyond the gorge, the Arkansas River overlooks the plain and becomes much wider, and just west of the city of Pueblo, Colorado, overlooks the Great Plains. Below it is a typical lowland river, with low banks that flood in the spring. The two largest tributaries are the Cimarron River and the Salt Fork Arkansas River . Below Tulsa, Oklahoma, the river is passable for large vessels.
