Overview

The song is named after the American War Strategy of the Vietnam War , " Find and Destroy ." According to Iggy Pop , the idea of the song came to him from the title of an article in Time magazine dedicated to the Vietnam War. The text contains a number of references to the events of this war: “heart full of napalm” ( Russian heart, full of napalm ), “love in the middle of a firefight” ( Russian love in the midst of shelling ). The theme of the song is a man who has nothing to lose - as the chorus says, “the world's forgotten boy / The one who searches only to destroy” ( Russian lost boy of the world, the one who seeks only to destroy ). The bright riff, invented under the influence of The Rolling Stones , the aggressive rhythm section, as well as the general mood - nihilistic, self-destructive, desperate - and the content of the song’s words make it one of the group’s closest to punk rock compositions. The phrase "street walking cheetah" ( Russian cheetah roaming the streets ) is a reference to a spotted cheetah hide vest and depicting a cheetah on its back, in which Iggy liked to walk around London. [2] And “heart full of napalm” came to his mind as an interpretation of The Yardbirds song “Heart Full of Soul”. [2]

The song gave its name to the influential punk magazine of the 1970s in San Francisco . Black Flag hardcore band leader Henry Rollins has a tattoo in the form of a picture that says “Search and Destroy.” The first lines of the text were used as a quote for the booklet of the debut album of the Swedish punk band Backyard Babies Diesel and Power . [3] The Skateboard team “Skate and destroy” got its name from this song. “Search and Destroy” is featured in True Crime: New York City , Tony Hawk's American Sk8land , Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, and Guitar Hero II . The song was also used in Wes Anderson ’s film “ The Water Life of Steve Zissu ” and in the Nike promotional campaign tied to the 1996 Olympics .

“Search and Destroy” has been sung over and over again, including by Cursed , EMF , Sex Pistols (as well as Sid Vichez solo), The Flowers of Romance , Samiam , Rocket From The Tombs , Everclear. A slightly accelerated version of the song performed by The Dictators was featured on their 1977 album Manifest Destiny and was often performed at concerts. The Dead Boys version was released as a separate single in 1977 . During sessions for the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, the song was recorded by Red Hot Chili Peppers ; she entered a bi-side on their singles Give It Away and By the Way , a compilation of The Beavis and Butt-head Experience , and later on the tribute to Iggy Pop We Will Fall: The Iggy Pop Tribute . A Search and Destroy cover by Def Leppard entered the EP with 2006 bonus tracks on Yeah! . Emanuel recorded a cover version for the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's American Wasteland . In 2011, Skunk Anansie recorded a cover version that was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Sucker Punch .

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine placed the song at number 468 on the list of “ 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ”.
