“Today” is the Latvian Russian-speaking independent democratic newspaper published in Riga from August 17, 1919 to June 21, 1940 . It was the largest and most substantial of the Russian newspapers in the Baltic states. [3] The newspaper did not belong to the emigrant Russian-language press, as it was founded by the natives of Latvia and was officially called the Latvian newspaper in Russian. [four]

Closing a newspaper and the fate of employees
After the Soviet troops entered the Republic of Latvia (June 17, 1940), the country immediately began dismantling all democratic institutions, primarily the free press. The last issue of the newspaper Today was published on June 21, 1940, after which it was closed. In an effort to save the newspaper, the editors changed the name to “Russkaya Gazeta” and, after re-registering on June 28, resumed production. However, this did not suit the Soviet administration, and after the release of the 5th issue on July 2, 1940, Russkaya Gazeta was also closed. After the forced change of the chief editor and the arrest of many employees, the former Segodnya resumed July 4, 1940 under the name Trudovaya Gazeta, which, in turn, was banned on November 9, 1940 and absorbed by the editors of the newly formed newspaper Proletarskaya Pravda.
The fate of the employees of "Today" in the majority formed tragically. M. Milrud, B.O. Khariton, A.K. Perov, E. Makhtus, G.A. Landau were arrested and deported to Soviet concentration camps. Cartoonist S. A. Tsivinsky was shot in Moscow in the Lubyanka . [5] I. A. Teitelbaum and Aleksandrs Greens were shot in Astrakhan . Gabriel Levin committed suicide in Vorkuta . Yuri Galich committed suicide in Riga after a call to the NKVD . Pyotr Pilsky was paralyzed after a stroke and therefore was not arrested by the NKVD; he died in December 1941 already during the Nazi occupation of Latvia.
Both publishers, J. Brahms and B. Polyak, having better appreciated the course of events, managed to emigrate to the USA .
