Biography
He was the son of a wealthy merchant and planter. His mother María del Carmen Alacán de Montalvo died when he was a child, and shortly after her death, his father sent Ramona to study in France, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1846 and then studied medicine in Paris and in 1853 received a doctorate in medicine from the Sorbonne with a specialization in surgery. Upon his return to Puerto Rico, Betanzés opened a hospital in Managuez at his own expense; gained fame for his active work in helping patients during the major cholera epidemic in Puerto Rico in 1856, as well as for large donations to the poor.
He was a consistent supporter of the abolition of slavery, founded a secret society, redeeming children from slavery after baptism. For his activities, he was eventually expelled from Puerto Rico by the Spanish colonial authorities and went first to the Dominican Republic, then to New York, where he founded the Revolutionary Committee of Puerto Rico with Segundo Ruiz Belvis. Then Betanes and Belvis returned to the Dominican Republic, where they began preparations for an armed intervention in Puerto Rico in order to overthrow the Spanish government and create secret cells of their supporters in Puerto Rico itself; these actions ultimately led to the defeat of the rebellious revolution Grito de Lares. After these events, Betans left for Paris, where he continued to advocate for the independence of Puerto Rico, having been awarded the Legion of Honor for his articles. Died in France; in 1920, his remains were reburied in San Juan .
