Marxist Group (UK)

Marxist Group , MG ( Eng. Marxist Group ) - Trotskyist organization in the UK in 1934-1938.

History

The group was created as a result of a split from the Communist League (KL). Despite Trotsky’s advice on entrism to the Independent Labor Party (NLP), the majority of the League pushed for work as an “open organization”. Only a third of the organization, led by Denzel Dean Harber, decides to follow Trotsky’s advice and forms a secret Bolshevik-Leninist Fraction in NLP. In 1934, a split in the League took shape organizationally, after which supporters of entrism in the NLP created a Marxist group.

In 1934, the young Trotskyist Ted Grant joined the MG. At that time, Trotsky invited the Marxist group to reorient to work within the Labor Party, but the leadership of the Marxist group did not accept its position. Then a minority of the organization, led by Ted Grant, leaves the MG in 1935 and forms the Bolshevik-Leninist Group (Bolshevik-Leninist Group), then known as the Militant Group. BLG began to operate within the youth organization of the Labor Party - the Labor League of Youth.

Soon, the group realizes that NLP does not enjoy massive influence outside Glasgow , and sends John Archer around the country to analyze the current situation of the party. At the 1936 NLP conference, the group proposed the adoption of a manifesto, which included a demand for the proclamation of the Fourth International . As a result of this, most of the group members were expelled from NLP.

At this time, MG worked closely with the Marxist League , the successor to the Communist League, whose members then also worked inside the NLP. In 1938, two organizations united in the Revolutionary Socialist League .
