Story
The film, covering more than ten years of the life of the protagonist Takaki Tono, consists of three stories that originate in Japan in the mid-1990s.
The full anime consists of 3 parts (Three stories about love, time and distance) :
- Excerpt from Sakura Blossoms - Okasho (桜 花 抄)
- Cosmonaut - Cosmonaut (コ ス モ ナ ウ ト)
- 5 centimeters per second - Byosoku 5 Senchimetoru (秒 速 5 セ ン チ メ ー ト ル).
At the same time, a lot of landscape and everyday scenes in the film were created on the basis of photographs of real places in Japan [2] .
History One: Excerpt from Sakura Blossom
After finishing elementary school, Takaki Tono and his close friend Akari Sinohara are forced to leave. Akari is being transferred to a high school in Tochigi Prefecture , while Takaki continues to attend high school in Tokyo . They write letters to each other and again find happiness in the opportunity to share their feelings with each other. But it so happened that after some time, the Takaki family was forced to move to Kagoshima Prefecture . Therefore, he decides to see Akari, because then they will be too far apart and, possibly, will not be able to meet. Takaki sets off to meet on a train with several transfers, but due to snowfall, the trains are more and more behind schedule ...
Second Story: Cosmonaut
Takaki enters a high school on Tanegashima Island, which houses the space center . On the very first day of school, Kanae Sumida falls in love with a boy transferred from Tokyo. She catches herself with the thought that she constantly wants to be near him, is everywhere looking for him through her eyes, but does not dare to tell about her feelings, continuing to love Takaki Tono unrequitedly for several years.
1999 year. Kanae’s feelings for Takaki only intensify, and when six months are left until the end of classes, she decides to confess his love at the next meeting.
This part, according to Makoto Shinkai, is his favorite part in the film [3] .
Story Three: 5 Centimeters Second
Takaki Tono is so busy at work that he does not notice how fast time flies, and after all, several years have passed after graduating from the university. Takaki breaks up with his girlfriend, having lived with her for three years.
In early spring 2008, Takaki quit his job. It seems to him that the reasons for this are innumerable, that he "was on the edge of the abyss", and at the same time - that there is not one that would convince him to the end. On a quiet weekday, he walks along the street and is not far from the railway crossing, where once upon a time they walked with Akari and admired the flowering sakura next to it. A girl walks towards Takaki. At that moment, when they pass each other, he understands that this is Akari, and that if she turns around now, she will also turn around.
Turning around, Takaki saw that Akari was also turning around, but the train that had passed between them interrupted their meeting of views, and after the train left, Akari was already gone.

The music was written by composer Tammon . He also worked on music for previous films by Makoto Shinkai.
