Biography
There is no information about the origin and early years of Rotbert's life. Perhaps he was not a lombard , but a franc [1] . The well-known ruler of the city of Asti preceding Rotbert was Count Odolrik , mentioned in the second half of the 880s, and Baterik [2] [3] , who owned this position in 880, was mentioned in the second half of the 880s.
Rothbert was named the ruler of Asti in several contemporary documents. In particular, in the charter of 902, preserved in Codex diplomaticus Langobardiae , his wife Emelda is recalled, transferring all her land possessions to the . The charter also has the signatures of two Rotbert vassals: Ubald and Andrei ( lat. “ Ubaldi et Andrei vassalli iamdicti Rotberti vicecomes ” ) [1] [2] [4] . Since the territories transferred to the Diocese of Astia were located in Monteglo (possibly near Cisterna d'Asti ), probably the Rotbert residence was also located here [5] . Whether Robert is identical with the viscount Outbert mentioned in documents from Asti in 903 and 910, there are opinions both for [2] and against [1] .
Rothbert probably as Viscount ruled the city of Asti on behalf of Margrave Ivrei Anskara I or his son and successor Adalbert I. Viscount , first mentioned in this post in the 920s [2] [6], was the next well-known ruler of Asti.
