History
The initiative to install the bust belonged to the Consul General of Russia in the city of Brest I. Konyakin. The composition was made by the Moscow sculptor Vitaly Shanov in collaboration with his wife Daria Uspenskaya. Sculptors note:
When creating the bust, we used the outline of a self-portrait of the poet himself. Our idea was to show how Pushkin creates, and the muse flies, and rhymes spin. In my opinion, we succeeded
Initially, the bust was planned to be installed at the intersection of Cosmonauts Boulevard and Pushkin Street at the main building of Brest State University , which bears the name of A.S. Pushkin , but subsequently the place of installation of the bust was changed. The leadership of the university proposed to transfer the bust to the old building of the university, which is located on Mitskevich street.
Starting in September, the high fence near the walls of the university was dismantled, and the workers began work on landscaping [1] of the territory adjacent to the old building of the University. A.S. Pushkin .
Discovery History
The opening ceremony of the bust took place on October 11, 2019. Anatoly Lis , Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee of the Brest Region , Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Belarus Dmitry Fedorovich Mezentsev spoke among the high-ranking guests invited to the opening. The chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Anatoly Lis said:
It is symbolic that this bust and this public garden are located on a street named after our and Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, a native of Belarus. Mickiewicz and Pushkin met often, both of them are classics of world culture and were very similar. When I first saw the portrait of Miscavige by the artist Vankovich, I immediately thought it was Pushkin
The head of the Russian diplomatic mission noted that the bust is a gift to the military-historical society and the entire people of the Russian Federation to the 1000-year-old Brest. A public garden near the university by decision of the city authorities can and should become a good place of attraction for creative people, including poets, artists, musicians
Parties noted:
The monument should embody a simple truth: the fates of the fraternal peoples of Russia and Belarus are inextricable, they are sealed by a common centuries-old history, indestructible friendship, mutual support, the very idea of belonging to one civilization. <...> The peoples of Belarus and Russia together look to the future and strengthen the Union State
Criticism
Opponents appeared around Pushkin’s bust installation for a long time [2] . After the fact, disputes have already flared up on the net: Belarusians were wondering why Brest had a monument to a Russian poet, “they talked again about Russia’s absorption of Belarus,” they tried to recall when Pushkin was driving through Brest. ”“ Shame on such a state that honors foreign heroes. Bolivar, Vysotsky, Nevsky, Pushkin ... And not a single monument of Bykov, Korotkevich, Tarashkevich, Savich and so on over the years of independence ” [3]
