Marcia Furnilla

Marcia Furnilla ( Latin Marcia Furnilla ; born in the , ) is the second wife of the Roman emperor Titus and mother of Julia Flavia .

Marcia Furnilla came from the Marcian family, who asserted that they descended from the Roman king Anka Marcius ^[2] . She was the daughter of Roman Senator Quintius Marcius Barei Sur and Anthony Furnilla. Her sister was Marcia , mother of Ulpia Martian and the future Roman emperor Trajan . Her father was a friend of the future Roman emperor Vespasian (who was the father of Titus); her paternal uncle was Senator Quintus Marcius Bareya Soran. Furnilli's paternal grandfather was Quintus Marcius Bareya Soran , consul-suffice in 34 and the pro-consul of the province of Africa in 41–43 ^[3] .

Marcia Furnilla was born and raised in Rome . She married Titus, widowed in 63. The marriage between Titus and Furnilla was concluded by agreement. This marriage was beneficial to Titus, as it contributed to his political career. Guy Suetonius Tranquill describes Furnilla as a woman with "very good connections." On September 17, 64, in Rome, Furnilla gave birth to Titus daughter Julia Flavius.

Like Titus's first marriage, the second also did not last long. The Furnilla family was associated with opponents of the Roman emperor Nero, and after the failure of the Pison conspiracy in 65, they lost the emperor’s disposition. Titus did not want to be associated with any potential conspirators and divorced Fournilla, but continued to raise their daughter.

Fournilla's fate after the divorce is unknown. After death, her body was placed in the mausoleum of Gaius Sulpicius Platorin, a magistrate during the time of Emperor Octavian Augustus , in Rome.
