He considers himself the successor to the Socialist Unified Party of Germany , the ruling party in the German Democratic Republic in 1949-1990.
History
Background
In 1918, the Communist Party of Germany (KKE) was created on the basis of the left wing of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany ( Spartak Union ). In 1933, the KKE was banned. Re-permitted in 1945, but again prohibited in West Germany in 1956. In East Germany, the KKE merged with the Left Social Democrats into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), but in 1990 its Leninist wing split off from the SED and formed the new Communist Party of Germany.
Creation
The GKP was founded in 1968 in West Germany after negotiations with the Minister of Justice, Social Democrat Gustav Heinemann . The possibilities of its registration were facilitated by the detente and the coming to power of the “big coalition” in Germany in 1966. The party’s honorary chairman was Max Reimann, the former chairman of the KPG banned in 1956. The PCG considers itself a successor to the traditions of the KKE (the Constitutional Court’s verdict prohibiting it is forbidden to found a successor party to the KKE).
Current status
In the elections to the Bundestag, the party did not receive more than 0.3% of the vote. In the landtags was also not represented. At the municipal level, has a number of deputies, the main strongholds of the GKP - the cities of North Rhine-Westphalia , Hesse and Lower Saxony . In 2005, members of the GKP participated in parliamentary elections under the flag of the Left Party .
