Biography
Coming from a noble family, nephew (on the maternal side) of Field Marshal Walter von Brauchitsch . Father, Hans von Haften, was president of the Imperial Archive. Brother Hans Bernd von Haften (1905-1944) served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, like Werner, was executed for participating in a conspiracy against Hitler. Brothers from youth knew the future colonel and participant in the anti-Hitler resistance Albrecht Merz von Quirnheim .
He received his law degree at the University of Berlin , worked as a syndicator (legal adviser) at the Hamburg Bank. The Haftenov brothers were connected by spiritual closeness with one of the prominent figures of the anti-Nazi movement, Pastor Martin Nimeller . After the outbreak of World War II, he entered the Wehrmacht, was promoted to officer, and participated in hostilities on the Eastern Front. After a serious wound, Lieutenant Werner von Haften in November 1943 was seconded to the Combined Arms Directorate of the Ground Forces, was a commissioning officer at the chief of staff of the Combined Arms Directorate of the High Command of the Ground Forces, Klaus von Stauffenberg . He retained this post even after the transfer of Stauffenberg on July 1, 1944 to the post of chief of staff of the reserve army.
He joined the conspiracy against Hitler. July 20, 1944 accompanied Stauffenberg during his trip to the Führer Headquarters. After the assassination attempt, together with Stauffenberg he flew to Berlin, stayed with him throughout the day, until the suppression of the conspiracy. He was arrested late on July 20 by officers loyal to Hitler.
By order of the reserve army commander, General Friedrich Fromm, was shot along with Stauffenberg , Friedrich Olbricht and Albrecht Merz von Quirnheim. Their bodies were buried in the cemetery of the church of St. Matthias in Berlin. However, Hitler ordered to open the graves, cremate corpses, and scatter the remains in the wind.

In the film epic "Liberation" (1968-1972), the role of Werner von Haften was played by Hans-Edgar Stäher.
In the 2004 German film Stauffenberg, the role of Werner von Haften was played by Hardy Krueger (Jr.) .
In the 2008 American film Operation Valkyrie , Jamie Parker played the role of Werner von Haften.
