Biography
Coming from a knightly family Siegerland having hereditary possession in Selbach . Mistakenly attributed to him earlier, the family name of von Rebdorf is associated with the name of the Rebdorf monastery Franciscans near Eichstett in Bavaria , where the manuscript of his chronicle was kept, with which its first edition was carried out [4] .
Perhaps he studied canon law in Bologna [5] , having received the title of master in 1324. After being ordained a priest, he served in 1328–1335 at the papal court in Avignon as prosecutor of the apostolic tribunal of the Roman company [6] .
Since 1336, he served as canon , then chaplain of Bishop Eichstett , having received from him for this a prebend in the parish of St. Willibald [7] . In the anniversary year of 1350, he visited Rome , where on March 14 a sacred relic was exhibited - the embroidered plate of Veronica with the face of the Savior .
According to the documents, he held senior positions in the office and the prison Bishop Eichstett Bertold von Zollern . In 1361 he was in Nuremberg at the exhibition of imperial regalia , organized on the occasion of the baptism of Prince Wenceslas .
He died on October 9, 1364 in Eichstätt.
Compositions
He is the alleged author of the Latin Chronicle of Emperors and Popes ( Latin Annales imperatorum et paparum ), in full - “Annals of the acts of kings and emperors Adolf , Albrecht , Frederick , Ludwig of Bavaria and Charles IV , or Annals of emperors and popes” ( Latin Annales rerum ab imperatoribus Adolpho, Alberto, Friderico, Ludovico Bavarico et Carolo IV gestarum oder Annales imperatorum et paparum ).
It covers the events from 1294 to 1363 [8] , and is a continuation of the worldwide Chronicle of Flores Temporum (circa 1343), attributed to the Franciscan monk from Swabia German Gigantis ( lat. Hermanni Gigantis ), but, according to the studies of German historians early. XX century., Compiled in fact around 1346 by an anonymous chronicler [9] . The original information is presented by Heinrich Taube from 1343 to 1363 and is based both on his personal impressions and the documents available to him from the Episcopal Chancellery of Eichstätt.
Paying attention mainly to the church policy of the German emperors, especially in relation to the period of the popes in Avignon , Heinrich Taube also reports many facts regarding the military and diplomatic history of the Holy Roman Empire . Of the Roman pontiffs, he covers in more detail the activities of Nicholas IV (1288-1292), Benedict XII (1334-1342), Clement VI (1342-1352) and Innocent VI (1352-1362). Yielding to the literary merits of the writings of Johann of Winterthur and Matthias of Neuenburg , his chronicle compares favorably with the factual accuracy and balanced estimates [10] .
The chronicle of Heinrich Taube has been preserved in at least 6 manuscripts from the collections of the National Library of France ( Paris ), the Austrian National Library ( Vienna ) and the Augustinian monastery of Klosterneuburg ( Tuln County, Lower Austria ), most of which belong to the second half. XIV century [11] .
The chronicle was first published by the historian and publisher Marquard Freyer in 1600 in Frankfurt, in the Rerum Germanicarum Scriptores and in the same place in 1634 reprinted. In 1618, it was published by lawyer Christoph Gevold in Ingolstadt , and in 1717 - by the historian Burhard Struve in Strasbourg . A commented scientific publication prepared by the famous archivist Johann Fr. Boomer for Fontes rerum Germanicarum and after his death in 1868 published in Stuttgart by the historian Alfons Huber . In 1883, translations of the chronicle into German came out: one in Einstatt, made by Diehringer, under the title Annales Imperatorum et Paparum Eistettenses , the other in Leipzig , owned by Grander. In 1922, in the series “Monuments of German History” , an academic publication was re-edited by Harry Bresslau, a professor at the University of Berlin, [12] .
Heinrich’s authorship was also established with respect to six biographies from the “Biographies of the Eichstätt bishops” ( lat. Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Eistetensis ), for the period from 1306 to 1355 [13] .
