History

During the reign of the Republic of Venice, the island was called Rondina ( Italian: Rondina ).

In 1853, the Austro-Hungarian general of Slavic origin, Baron Lazar Mamula, built a fortress on the island, which occupies most of its territory. Together with similar forts on Cape Arza (Lustica Peninsula) and Cape Oshtro (Prevlaka Peninsula), which were also allegedly erected at the same time by Lazar Mamula, it became part of the Austro-Hungarian fortification system to protect the Bay of Kotor from attack from the sea.

During the Second World War, the Italian authorities controlling the region from May 30, 1942 placed a concentration camp on the island.

In 2016, the government of Montenegro , despite the objections of the former prisoners of the concentration camp, approved plans to transform the island and fortress into a hotel. [2] [3] [4]
