In 1882, Anton Pavlovich planned to print this work as part of the author's collection " Prank ". While awaiting verification by the censorship committee, the author made some changes to the humorous profile [1] . In particular, the reference to the Moskovskiye Vedomosti newspaper was removed. Later, on this occasion, N. A. Leikin wrote to Chekhov: “Since Feoktistov settled in the Main Directorate for Press, the helpful censor has been extorting the words“ Katkov ”and“ Moscow Gazette “from everywhere, if they are spoken of without due respect” [ 1] . The collection was printed, but in the end was not allowed by censorship [2] .
Despite censorship, Chekhov’s scholars noted that the editors of Moskovskiye Vedomosti were mentioned in humoresque as “the most famous, immortal neighbor of the Spectator ”. The prototype of the choleric - melancholic from humor was Mikhail Nikiforovich Katkov , against whom the satire of this part of the work was directed [1] .
The idea of humor was later borrowed by Nikolai Mikhailovich Ezhov. According to Mikhail Gromov , the implementation was not talented enough [3] .
