Personal life and activism
In an interview with Montreal Gazette, Bastien-Charlebois describes the “normalizing” operations carried out by her at the age of 17 as a process of imprisonment. [3] [4] [5] Engaged in activism after meeting Curtis Hinckle, founder of Intersex International, in Montreal in 2005. [3] Participated in the second and third International Intersex Forums. [2]
Career
Janique Bastien-Charlebois is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where she works in research groups on the Culture of Evidence, homophobia, and the Institute for the Study of Feminism. During 2014 and 2015, Bastien-Charlebois was a visiting scholar at the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2018, she headed the Department of Undergraduate Programs in Cultural Animation and Research. [6]
Her book La virilité en jeu (translated from French - “Courage at stake”) explores the inevitability of homophobic behavior of boys through interviews with teenage boys. Bastien-Charlebois disputes arguments focused on human nature and the formation of male identity, suggesting that heterosexuality is socially constructed. [7]
In a recent work, Bastien-Charlebois criticizes the treatment of intersex people. [2]
