History

The street appeared shortly after the founding of Sevastopol in 1786 , during which time it changed its name several times, from 1786 to Morskaya, then Bolshaya Morskaya, from 1921 Karl Marx and again from 1946 Bolshaya Morskaya.

Until the second half of the 19th century, Morskaya Street took its origin from the area of modern Nakhimov Square and included part of the modern Nakhimov Avenue and Lazarev Square , which became an area only after the Crimean War .

During World War II, the street was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt first, in the late 1940s and early 1950s , which determined its modern architectural appearance. Buildings of "Stalinist" architecture, built of white Inkerman stone are similar in architecture, but built according to individual designs. On Bolshaya Morskaya several architectural monuments of pre-revolutionary Russia were preserved:

  • Pokrovsky Cathedral ( 1905 , architect V. Feldman),
  • Sevastopol Kenassa ( 1908 , architect A. Weisen),
  • General Post Office ( 1914 , architect Dolin).
