Description

Windows Embedded CE is a component, multi-tasking, multi-threaded, multi-platform operating system with real-time support. Developers have about 600 components available, using which they can create their own operating system images that include only the functionality needed by that particular device. The operating system provides application developers with a set of APIs based on the standard Win32 API and supplemented with specialized APIs for embedded devices. Since CE supports only a part of the Win32 API and has certain specificities related to the embedded nature of the operating system, applications written for desktop versions of the Windows operating system may require additional adaptations and modifications to run them on embedded devices; and in any case, to run the programs on the device, they will need to be recompiled.

Just like the desktop versions of Windows, Windows Embedded CE uses the standard executable file format - Portable Executable (PE). This allows you to use most of the standard utilities that work with the PE format, such as Dependency Walker (dependency checking) or DumpBin.

Embedded CE 6.0 operating system development tools are integrated with Visual Studio 2005. They come as an addition to this modern development package. Integration with Visual Studio allows you to use the same environment for the development of both application and system programs. Along with the new development tools, a new ARM device emulator, integrated in Platform Builder, is delivered that facilitates the process of configuring, creating and testing operating system images. All the power of the source editor of a modern Visual Studio is available to developers on CE 6.0: syntax highlighting and InteliSense technology (including BIB files). New graphics editors have appeared: registry editor, operating system image editor. CE 6.0 uses improved Visual Studio 2005 compilers. New compilers have improved C ++ compatibility; provide improved libraries; support CRT, ATL and MFC , and also offer advanced runtime security checks (/ GS). The new version of CE has the possibility of "posthumous" debugging. This provides additional options for diagnosing potential problems and optimizing performance. Included in the delivery is a utility that determines the required runtime license, supports exporting reports to HTML , which improves interaction when working on a project and accounting.

Communication with Windows Mobile and Windows Phone

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 is not used in the Windows Mobile platform, but it is at the heart of the Zune HD . The next version of Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 Series , is partly based on Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3.

New features
