Purpose
cPanel is quite common software, perhaps even the most common of all commercial control panels for hosting, especially hosting providers in Europe and North America. Not the last reason is that cPanel has advanced functionality for reselling hosting .
Supported Operating Systems
As of November 2008, the manufacturer has declared support for the following operating systems:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (Recommended OS)
- CentOS (Recommended OS)
- FreeBSD (proposed to be used only by qualified specialists) - not supported since 09/30/2012
Apparently, cPanel can also be installed on other Linux distributions , but this may require more effort from the administrator than using the OS recommended by the manufacturer. When using FreeBSD, you must follow the recommendation of the Cpanel developers and not use binary packages to install new software, but use only ports .
Licensing
The presence and validity of the license is controlled by cPanel automatically contacting the manufacturer's authorization server, which determines whether the license is valid.
