Smith Edward Ellis

Smith Edward Ellis ( eng . Smith, Edward Ellis) ( March 31, 1921 - February 13, 1982 ), American intelligence officer of the Cold War period, historian, economist, diplomat. A native of West Virginia . He graduated from the University of West Virginia ( 1943 ).

During World War II he served in the American Army in Europe . He was awarded three Bronze stars for his courage.

After the war, he worked in the army intelligence in Washington , studied at the Strategic Intelligence School in the Pentagon and at the Counter Intelligence School at Camp Holabird, studied Russian at the US Naval intelligence school School), was fluent in Russian .

In 1948 , Smith was sent to Moscow as an assistant to the United States military attache . In September 1950 , he returned to Washington, where he was seconded to the Central Intelligence Agency .

In 1953 , he became the first CIA officer sent on a business trip to Moscow under diplomatic "cover." He studied the economic policy of the USSR as a diplomat. In 1956 he reported to his leadership that the KGB had attempted to recruit him using Smith's intimate relationship with the Soviet maid of the embassy. He was recalled from Moscow and fired from the CIA.

After his dismissal, he worked at the Hoover Institute for War, Revolution and Peace . Between 1970 and 1980 , Smith was vice president of Crocker Bank, and worked for Smith Bellingham International Inc.

He wrote two books - about the tsarist secret police and about the young years of I.V. Stalin , left many publications on Russian subjects in periodicals. Until the end of his life, he was suspected of transmitting secret materials to the KGB.

He died in a car accident.
