History

Portrait of Anna Cook by

Spalding's House was built in 1925 as the residence of the patroness of the arts, , widow of , businessman and descendant of missionaries. At the same time, the Honolulu Academy of Arts (later renamed the Honolulu Art Museum ) was established on the site of her former home on Beretania Street in Honolulu. According to Mrs. Cook's testament, Spalding's house was inherited by her daughter Alice Spalding, and was acquired in 1968 by the Honolulu Art Museum, which used it from 1970 to 1978 for an exhibition of Japanese prints. In the late 1970s, the house was sold by the museum to the owners of a subsidiary, the publishing house of the daily newspaper . In 1986, an American businessman and philanthropist , whose family owned the newspaper, decided to transform Spalding’s home into The Contemporary Museum — this is the year the Honolulu Museum was founded. After reconstruction and the creation of a new building - Milton Cades Pavilion , which was attended by sculptor Robert Graham and artist , the museum was opened to the public in October 1988. In addition to art galleries, it had administrative offices, utility rooms, a shop and a cafe. [1] [2]

The garden area adjacent to the museum building was originally landscaped during the years 1928-1941 by the Rev. K. H. Inagaki , a Christian priest of Japanese descent. In 1979-1980, the gardens were reanimated by landscape architect James C. Hubbard Honolulu. In the 1990s, landscape architect brought gardens to their current state. The park exhibits sculptures by , , , , George Ricky , , and , as well as the wall painting by .

Merger with Honolulu Art Museum

On May 2, 2011, the Modern Honolulu Museum ceased to exist as an independent organization, merging with the Honolulu Art Museum (at that time it was called Honolulu Art Academy). The collection of the Modern Museum, containing more than 3,000 works of art, was also transferred to the Honolulu Art Museum.
