Blessed sky

“Holy Sky” - an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary , according to legend, brought to Moscow at the end of the 14th century from Lithuania by the wife of Grand Duke Vasily I Sofia Vitovtovna as a parental blessing. Previously, the image was in Smolensk [2] . The name goes back to the text of the Mother of God of the 1st hour (written on the icon inside the brilliance of the radiance): “What are you speaking of, O Grace? Heaven, as the sun of truth has risen. ”

History and Honored Lists

Based on the sample brought by Sophia by the icon painters of the Armory in 1678 - 1680, a list of the icon was made for the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin (in the local row of the iconostasis , to the left of the Royal Gates ). In 1682, the master Vasily Poznansky painted an application icon for the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Kremlin ’s Terem Palace .

Iconography reproduces the vision by John the Theologian of a Woman clothed in the sun . The Mother of God is depicted in full growth, with the Divine Infant on her left hand. Her figure is surrounded by a solar mandorla , under her feet is a crescent moon. The heads of Mary and Jesus are crowned with crowns .

The celebration of the icon takes place on March 6 (19) , as well as in the week of All Saints .

Locally venerable image lists are available in the Moscow churches of the Trinity on the Sparrow Hills and the Archangel Gabriel on Chistye Prudy .

The Icon of the Mother of God “Holy Sky” is prayed for healing from mental and physical illnesses. They turn to her when they ask for guidance on the path of the Christian faith of those who lead an unrighteous lifestyle. Some people call this image of the Mother of God according to the prayer “What shall we say”. The Icon of the Mother of God “The Grace of Heaven” is particularly revered in Moscow, as it has been in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin since ancient times.
