The American League Western Division is one of six Major League baseball divisions formed by the expansion of the league. In 1969 , the number of Major League Baseball players increased from 20 to 24. The Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots (now Milwaukee Brewers ) were admitted to the American League . Newcomers to the National League were the San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos (currently the Washington Nationals ). Each league was divided into two divisions of six teams: “East” and “West”. Members of the American League West Division are: California Angels , Kansas City Royals , Minnesota Twins , Auckland Athletics , Seattle Pilots and Chicago White Sox .
Before the 1972 season , the Washington Senators East Division club moved to Texas and continued with the West Division as the Texas Rangers . To equalize the number of participants, Milwaukee Brewers were transferred to the Eastern Division.
In 1977 , the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays were admitted to the American League . Mariners became new members of the Western Division .
By the 1994 season, the number of teams in each league had grown to 14 (in 1993 , the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins joined the National League ). In each league, the third division, “Central,” was added, and teams were redistributed. As a result, the Royals, Twins, and White Sox left the Western Division and continued to play in the newly created Central Division . Over the next 19 seasons, there were 4 members in the division. In the 2013 season, Houston Astros became the fifth member of the division.
As of 2018, the most successful division team is Auckland Athletics (won 16 titles + received a wild card three times).
All current members of the division managed to win the division at least twice.
