Writer

Writer , writer (less often writer ) - a person who is engaged in the creation of verbal works intended one way or another for public consumption (and not just for the direct addressee).

The writer is usually called the person for whom the specified occupation is the main or one of the main. In addition, as criteria for the author of the text to belong to the category of writers, he can use his income from his works: in recent times - in the form of fees , royalties , grants , in earlier eras - material rewards from representatives of privileged classes who are somehow interested in support of art (see also patronage of arts). Another form of socialization of the writer in this capacity is the recognition by the writing community, literary critics and other instances of literary peer review. Such expert assessment can take institutionalized forms - for example, in the form of creating associations (unions) of professional writers .

The scope of the concept of “writer” varies in different cultures and in different eras. Thus, the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedia and the Russian Biographical Dictionary often use the definition of “writer” in articles about scientists, critics, and journalists, including phrases like “writer on agriculture in Courland 1804–1824” ^[1] . Following such a broad interpretation of the concept is the expression “ technical writer ”, which still exists, denoting the author of technical texts, technical documentation, instructions, etc. At the same time, more modern sources understand writers exclusively as authors of fiction : for example, Ushakov’s dictionary ( 1935 - 1940 ) defined the writer as “a person writing literary works” ^[2] .
