November 4, 1847 [2] , while checking the soporific effect of various gases, Simpson and his assistant accidentally breathed in chloroform. When, after some time, Simpson's assistant entered the laboratory, he found the professor and his assistant lying on the floor. The assistant called for help. Households and attendants immediately rushed to the laboratory, which was in the professor’s house. Everyone was terribly scared. But then, after a few minutes, Simpson woke up very happy. He discovered a new anesthetic!

Simpson conducted a series of experiments on himself, before he ventured to put chloroform into practice.

On November 15, 1847, he published in a university journal a report on the use of chloroform for anesthesia. And then a terrible scandal erupted. The church opposed Simpson. Simpson was declared atheist and cursed.

Simpson entered into a verbal squabble with the church. The tribune was provided by one Edinburgh newspaper.

Chloroform quickly began to displace ether, but in 1849, Diday and Petryakin, on the basis of numerous deaths observed in Lyon, recognized chloroform as a dangerous poison. [3]

His most important works: “Gynecological works”, “Essays of anaesthesia” and others [4] .
