The building, located in the very center of the city, dates back to the parish church of the Virgin Mary, founded around 1180, significantly expanded and rebuilt between 1453 and 1563 in the high Gothic style. An elegant two-tier baroque spire 87 m high was erected in 1672 by Joachim Macwardt of Plauen to replace the original pommel damaged by a lightning strike. [one]
In 1885-1891, the church was renewed in the then modern spirit of “regatization” according to the project of Oscar Motes : thus, among other things, the southern “wedding portal” was decorated with new figures from the biblical parable of ten virgins ; The buttresses of the temple also underwent neo-Gothic processing.
In the interior, the Piet of the work of Peter Breuer (c. 1500), the altar of the work of Michael Wolgemut (1479) and the department of work of Paul Speck (1538) are worthy of mention.
