History

The painting "Orange, Red, Yellow" was acquired by the London Marlborough Fine Art Gallery , which got there from the New York gallery Marlborough-Gerson in New York. From February to March 1964, she was exhibited at the Marlborough-New London Gallery in London as part of the Mark Rothko exhibition. The London Gallery sold this work in 1967 to David Pincus [1] , who is considered one of the leading American art collectors in the second half of the 20th century [2] . The painting was hidden from the general public for 45 years [2] [1] , while it was owned by Pincus, and was shown only on special occasions. From September to November 1986, "Orange, Red, Yellow" was exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art at the Philadelphia Collects: Art from 1940 exhibition ( Philadelphia Collects: Art Since 1940 ). From June to December 1996, the painting was presented by the Palmer Museum of Art at the University of Pennsylvania at University Park as part of the Abstraction to Figuration: Selections of Contemporary Art from the Pincus exhibition Collection ) [1] .

2012 Auction

Before the sale of “Orange, Red, Yellow,” the record price for Mark Rothko’s work was $ 72.8 million, set on May 17, 2007, when the Qatar royal family purchased David Whiteefeller’s painting “The White Center (yellow, pink and purple on pink)” " [3] [4] [5] . The price of the hammer “Orange, red, yellow” amounted to $ 77.5 million, and taking into account the commission of the buyer - $ 86.8 million [2] , thereby setting a new record for post-war contemporary art [3] [5] at public auction excluding inflation . At the same time, the highest price paid for the post-war private sale painting is thought to be $ 140 million (approximately $ 160 million in May 2012) for Jackson Pollock 's No. 5, 1948 , in November 2006. In constant dollars, the record price for post-war art at public auction remained the amount of $ 86.3 (approximately $ 92 million in terms of May 2012), paid for Francis Bacon's 1976 Triptych at the Sotheby 's auction in May 2008.

It was assumed on the basis of pre-sale estimates that the value of “Orange, Red, Yellow” would exceed the amount of $ 45 million. When it reached $ 70 million during the auction, there were three bidders competing for it [6] . Bidding went on for more than six and a half minutes [5] , which made them the longest in selling works of modern art [2] .

Criticism

Suren Melikyan from The New York Times called Rothko's work “Orange, Red, Yellow,” called the strongest of all his paintings [2] . Kelly Crowe of The Wall Street Journal noted that “a trio of orange and yellow rectangles swaying against a cherry-red background forms a palette that is as attractive as a sunset or popsicle,” adding that “auction experts say collectors traditionally they pay more for works that are red and gold, as opposed to gray ones ” [4] .
