The etymology of the toponym seems difficult, but it can be assumed that it is based on the Svan root gim , associated with agriculture. Considered [by whom? ] that the Ossetian village of Jimi appeared in the late Middle Ages , probably in the 15th century. The population consisted of descendants of the tribes of the Alagir society - Sidamont and Kusagont, the Bekuzarovs and Gasievs were considered the largest surnames. Defensive structures in the form of a combat and residential tower (Ghans of the Gasiyevs), as well as a funerary crypt of a tower type, were preserved in the village. At the end of the XIX century, the development of deposits of copper and silver-lead ores began here, the development of which continued in the Soviet period. In the process of urbanization , the relocation of the highlanders to larger cities began, as a result of which the population decreased by more than half. Currently with. Jimi, is the ruins of an ancient settlement on the right bank of the Ardon River.
