BAIC Group

The BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. or Beijing Automotive Group Co.) is a Chinese state-owned holding company that combines several automotive and machine-building enterprises. Founded in 1958, the headquarters is located in Beijing , the total number of employees is over 130 thousand people [1] [2] .

The main subsidiaries of the BAIC Group are BAIC Motor (cars), BAW (military and SUV cars), Foton Motor (trucks, buses, agricultural machinery), Changhe (minibuses and SUVs). Joint ventures of Beijing Hyundai and Beijing Benz produce Hyundai and Mercedes cars for the Chinese market, respectively.

BAIC Group is China's fifth largest car manufacturer and second largest commercial vehicle manufacturer. The main export markets of the BAIC Group are Russia , South Africa , Vietnam , Egypt , Mexico , Brazil , Colombia , Bangladesh , India , the Philippines , Indonesia , Mongolia and Italy [3] [4] .

History

In 1953, the "First Automotive Parts Factory" was founded in Beijing, which was renamed Beijing Automobile Works (BAW) in 1958. Beijing Jeep Corporation was founded in 1984 - the first joint automobile venture in China between the state-owned BAIC group and the American company American Motors (in 1987, American Motors was acquired by Chrysler , and in 1998 Chrysler merged with the German concern Daimler ). In 1987, BAW took over Beijing Motorcycle Company. In 2002, Beijing Hyundai was established - a joint venture between the BAIC group and the Korean corporation Hyundai Motor for the production of cars.

In 2005, Beijing Jeep Corporation was renamed Beijing Benz (a joint venture between BAIC and Daimler Chrysler). In 2006, a joint venture was established between Foton Motor and Cummins, an American company producing diesel engines. In 2007, Daimler Chrysler sold its U.S. subsidiary of Chrysler and was renamed Daimler AG (the Beijing JV Chinese joint venture became part of the German Daimler group).

In 2009, Foton Motor established joint ventures with the German automobile concern Daimler for the production of trucks and with Pulead Technology Industry for the production of rechargeable batteries. In 2010, Beijing Benz opened a new car assembly plant in Beijing. In 2013, Daimler acquired a 9.5% stake in a subsidiary of BAIC Motor. In the same 2013, the BAIC Group acquired from another state-owned company Changan a 70% stake in minibus manufacturer Changhe Auto from Jiangxi Province [5] . In 2017, Beijing Hyundai opened a new car assembly plant in Chongqing .

In the same 2017, a joint venture was established between Foton Motor and the German company ZF Friedrichshafen AG for the production of automatic transmissions. In July 2019, the BAIC Group acquired a 5% stake in Daimler (another 10% Daimler is owned by the Chinese private company Geely Automobile ) [6] [7] . Also in July 2019, the BAIC Group and the Canadian corporation Magna International created a joint venture for the production of electric vehicles in Zhenjiang [8] .

Subsidiaries

  • BAIC Motor Company (BAIC Motor Corporation Limited) was founded in 2010 in Beijing, producing cars and commercial vehicles under the brands Senova, BAIC BJ and Beijing BJ, as well as automotive components. Since 2014, BAIC Motor shares have been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (the main shareholders of the company are BAIC Group, the state-owned metallurgical corporation Shougang Group and the German concern Daimler ). As of 2019, BAIC Motor sales amounted to $ 23 billion, assets - $ 25.1 billion, market capitalization - $ 6.4 billion, the company employed 20.4 thousand employees [9] [10] .
  • BAW (Beijing Automobile Works Co.) was founded in 1953 in Beijing and manufactures military and civilian SUVs , pickups, vans and trucks under the brands BJ, Fenix, Yusheng, Luba, Jinggangshan, Dongfanghong and Hongwei.
 
Foton Motor Headquarters
  • Foton Motor Group (Beiqi Foton Motor Co.) was founded in Beijing in 1996 and manufactures buses, trucks, vans, minivans, SUVs and agricultural machinery under the brands Foton, AUV, Auman, Aumark, Forland, Ollin, Gratour and Sauvana. Foton Motor assembly plants operate in India, Bangladesh and Brazil [11] .
  • Changhe Company (Jiangxi Changhe Automobile Co.) was founded in 1969 in Jingdezhen , producing light trucks, vans, minivans, vans and crossovers under the brands Changhe, Freedom, Ideal and Beidouxing.
  • BAIC Yinxiang (a joint venture of the BAIC Group and the Yinxiang Group of Chongqing ) was founded in 2010 and manufactures cars under the brands Weiwang, Huansu and Bisu.
  • BHAP (Beijing Hainachuan Automotive Parts Co.) was founded in 2008 in Beijing and manufactures automotive parts and components. The company employs about 30 thousand people [12] .
  • BGAC company (Beijing General Aviation Co.) is engaged in the development, production and maintenance of aircraft [13] .
  • BAIC International Development Co. engaged in the export of products of the group and is responsible for international operations of BAIC Group.
  • BAIC Rocar is engaged in leasing and maintenance of vehicles, as well as the supply of spare parts.
  • BAIC Mobility was founded in 2017 and is developing the car-sharing business of BAIC Group [14] .

Other BAIC Group subsidiaries include BAIC Investment, BAIC Hong Kong Investment, Beijing Beinei Engine Parts and Components, Beijing Automobile Assembly, BAIC Motor Powertrain, BAIC Motor Sales, BAIC BluePark New Energy Technology, BAIC MB-tech Development Center. In Italian Turin , the BAIC Group Modeling Center operates.

  • Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co. (Beijing) - a joint venture of Foton Motor and Cummins for the production of engines.
  • BAIC BJEV (Beijing Electric Vehicle Co.) is a joint venture of the BAIC Group, Magna International and LeEco for the production of electric vehicles under the brand ArcFox [17] .

Other joint ventures of BAIC Group include Mercedes-Benz Leasing, Beijing Hyundai Auto Finance, BAIC Group Finance and Beijing Mercedes-Benz Sales Service.
