History and Description

Botin Arts Center opened in Santander ( Cantabria ) on June 23, 2017, with a delay of three years from the original date; it is managed by the Fundación Botín Foundation, created in 1964 by Marcelino Botín Sans de Sautuola and his wife Maria del Carmen, Ilera Camino [1] . The museum building was erected by the architect Renzo Piano : it consists of two buildings of different sizes; both hulls are supported by columns and partially “suspended” above the sea. The western building houses the main exhibition hall, with a total area of 2500 m²; In addition, commercial and restoration areas are located in this building. The smaller, eastern, building is used for educational events - it has an area of 950 m²; it has a large terrace overlooking Santander Bay.

“Light and lightness” are important parts of the museum concept: in this way, sunlight is reflected in the ceramic facade of the museum building - a facade consisting of 280,000 discoid fragments that adapt to the streamlined geometry of the building itself. The project also affected the Jardines de Pereda gardens adjacent to the building and opened in 2014 (renovation and expansion was carried out according to the project of landscape designer Fernando Caruncho). According to the former president of the Botin Foundation, Emilio Botin, the construction budget amounted to 77 million euros ; according to other sources, the final cost of the work amounted to 100 million euros. In addition, the fund allocated an annual budget of € 12.5 million to support and develop the center's activities [2] .

The Fundación Botín Art Collection reflects the history of fine art of the last forty years: specializing in contemporary art, it contains works in various fields - from painting and sculpture to photography and installations .
