Biography

V.A. Kan-Kalik was appointed rector of CHIGU im. L.N. Tolstoy in 1990, Academician A.V. Petrovsky, calling in his memoirs the appointment of Kan-Kalik "unexpected", wrote that "in all probability, this was due to interethnic relations in the republic. It was assumed that the Chechens did not want to see the Ingush in the rector's chair, and the Ingush - the Chechen. The Mountain Jew turned out to be preferable ” [2] .

The new rector introduced the study of Chechen and Ingush languages at all faculties , a medical faculty was created at the university, professors from Siberia , the Urals , cities of the center of Russia, and the Kazakh SSR ( Tselinograd ) were invited to work. In addition, assessment control at entrance exams was tightened, which destroyed the established corruption scheme.

The latter, presumably, was the reason that the rector's life threatened almost immediately after his election: in his office, mercury was spilled by unknown people, after which the rector opened hypertension and his vision deteriorated. Then they tried to toss money into the office of Kan-Kalik and accuse the rector of receiving a bribe. A denunciation article was published against the professor in the newspaper Sovetskaya Kultura [2] , which did not bring any meaningful result: despite the difficult time in the republic, V. A. Kan-Kalik, being a democratic leader, enjoyed the support of students.

The threat of life forced V.A. Kan-Kalik to take steps to move to a new job in Moscow, however, on the evening of November 11, 1991, the rector was abducted by unknown persons. Viktor Abramovich Kan-Kalik and vice - rector Abdul-Khamid Bisliev together left the university building when a group of armed people forced the rector into the Volga car. Bisliev, trying to stop the abductors, was mortally wounded by a machine gun burst.

The body of Viktor Abramovich, who was tortured, was discovered in early March 1992, buried in the Grozny district .

Victor Abramovich Kan-Kalik is buried in Moscow at the Vostryakovsky cemetery .
