McKink, Herman

Herman Makkink ( Dutch: Herman Makkink ; born October 21, 1937 , Winschoten , Netherlands - October 20, 2013 , Amsterdam , Netherlands ) is a Dutch sculptor, graphic designer and illustrator.

Life and work

Mackinck was born in the Dutch city of Winshotten. From 1955 to 1959 he studied chemistry in Groningen . After graduation, he began hitchhiking in Southeast Asia , Australia and South America . McKink described this stage of his life in his book Around the world on foot . He worked in Japan as an English teacher. Later he went to the USA , where he first began to engage in sculpture. Then he again changed his place of residence, moving to London , where he became an assistant at the London Press College.

McKink's first solo exhibition, “Dwarves,” was organized in 1971 at the Curto Institute of the Arts . The sculpture works were spotted by Stanley Kubrick . The director used the works of McKink The Rocking Machine and Christ Unlimited in the film " Clockwork Orange " [1] . Tinto Brass also used The Rocking Machine in his film “The Retired” [2] .

In 1972, the sculptor moved to Amsterdam. McKink's first solo exhibition at the Wetering Gallery took place in 1982, and since then his work has continued to be displayed in the gallery. In 1986, he was a visiting professor at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. From 1987 to 2000, McKink taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy .

The sculptor died on October 20, 2013 in Amsterdam [3] .

Personal life

McKink was married and divorced twice. He raised a daughter and two stepsons. The sculptor's actual wife was British writer Julia Blackburn.
