His Holiness

His Holiness is titling in the Christian Church of the primates ( patriarchs ) of the Orthodox Church , as well as the Pope in the Roman Catholic Church .

Use in different denominations

Appeal to the Primate or the Pope - Your Holiness . The ancient Eastern patriarchs, however, have the title of " His Bliss " ( Greek Ή Αυτού Θειοτάτη Μακαριότης ), and they are referred to as "Your Bliss". The official titling of the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople is “His Divine All-Holy Peoples” ( Greek Η Αυτού Θειοτάτη Παναγιότης ).

The Primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church has the title "His Holiness and Bliss."

In Catholicism, titling comes from the Latin Sanctitas . This title was originally used for all bishops , but from the 7th century it began to be used only for patriarchs and some secular rulers, and from the 14th century its use was restricted to the Pope.

The title is also used in the appeal to the Dalai Lama , the heads of the Tibetan Buddhist schools (traditions) and Pandito Khambo Lama of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia .

Status in the Russian Federation

The Russian Federation is a republic where there are no estates and no legal privileges, and the church is separated from the state ( article 14 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation ). Therefore, the title is not legally binding, but it is mentioned in some official government documents.
