History
At the beginning of the Han empire, Zhangjun County (鄣 鄣) authorities were stationed here. In 109 BC e. the district was renamed Danyang (丹阳 郡), and its authorities moved to Wanling County; Guzhan County (故 鄣 县, "old Zhang") was created on a site previously directly subordinate to the authorities of Zhangjun County. At the end of the Han Empire, Guande (广德县) County was allocated from Guzhan County, with Lu Meng as its head in 203.
Subsequently, the county was renamed more than once, disbanded and formed again. During the Song Empire, the Guangde Military District (广 德军) was formed in 979, with authorities located in Guangde County. After the Mongol conquest and the formation of the Yuan Empire, the Guangdong Military District was transformed into the Guangdan Region (广 德 路), which included the counties of Guangde and Jianping (建平县). When the rebels, led by Zhu Yuanzhang in 1356, seized these places, the Guangdong region was renamed the Guangxin City Council (广 兴 府), and Guangping County - in Guangyang (广 阳县). After the founding of the Ming empire, the Guangxi government was renamed the Guangdean government (广 德 府), and soon demoted to the province. Then Guangyang County was disbanded, and its lands passed under the direct control of the regional structures. The region lasted until the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, after which the regions were abolished as a result of administrative reform; on the lands directly subordinate to the regional authorities, Guangde County was re-formed.
After the communists took control of these places during the Civil War , in May 1949 the Xuancheng Special Region (宣城 专区) was formed and the county became part of it. In 1951, Xuancheng Special District was disbanded, and the county became part of the Wuhu Special District (芜湖 专区), which was renamed Wuhu County (芜湖 地区) in 1971.
In 1973, the city of Wuhu was removed from the district, becoming a city of provincial subordination. In 1980, Wuhu County was subordinated to the authorities of Wuhu City, and county government moved from Wuhu County to Xuancheng County, after which Wuhu County was renamed Xuancheng County (宣城 地区).
In 2000, by the decision of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Xuancheng County was transformed into an urban district, and the county became part of it.
In 2019, Guangde County was transformed into a city county.
