The idea of expanding the museum to include the Museo Provinciale d'Arte di Trento collection and the collection of works by the famous representative of the futurist Fortunato Depero came up in the late 1980s and belongs to the Italian art historian, then director of the museum, . On December 15, 2002, the Trento and Rovereto Museum of Contemporary Art opened to the general public with a new headquarters in Rovereto.
The design of the new museum building was entrusted to the Swiss architect Mario Botta , who designed it together with civil engineer Giulio Andreolli . The building in classical forms was built on a piece of land between the two historic buildings of the city - Palazzo Alberti Poja and Palazzo Annona , which had to be preserved. The central hall of the round shape in the agora style has a glazed dome with a diameter of 40 meters. In the center under the dome is a fountain. The hall can accommodate up to 1200 visitors.
