Name Origin

The name of the XVI century is given according to the Tver Yamskaya settlement , which appeared here under Ivan the Terrible and remained almost until the end of the XIX century . A number of streets and lanes are also named after Tverskaya Yamskaya Sloboda, differing in serial numbers: 2nd Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street , 3rd Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street , 4th Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street , 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Lane , 2- th Tverskaya-Yamskaya lane .

History

Living in the Tver Yamskaya Sloboda, which occupied a large space on both sides of the Tverskaya Road, the coachmen provided for the transportation of mail , passengers and goods, first along the Moscow- Tver highway , then Moscow -St . Petersburg . The Sloboda retained its character until the second half of the 19th century , but after the end of the Yamskaya race and the construction of the Smolensky (now Belorussky ) station in 1870, active development of Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street began, and it began to look more and more like Tverskaya Street . In 1872, they launched a show , and at the beginning of the 20th century - a tram .

At the intersection of 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya and Vasilyevskaya streets was the church of Vasily of Caesarea, known since the 16th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the St. Nicholas Chapel was built next to it according to the design of F.O. Shekhtel in memory of the wedding day of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Fedorovna (the church and the chapel were not preserved).

In 1932, 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street was united with Tverskaya under the general name and since that time was named in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky Gorky Street. In 1990, the street was returned to its historical name.

In 2013, the developer began to demolish the building, meeting resistance from city defenders [25] : the public Coalition for the Protection of Old Moscow and Fronde TV stopped demolishing the house several times, which sometimes ended in brawls [26] . In November 2012, a working group under the Government of Moscow approved a project for the reconstruction of the building into a hotel complex, providing for the demolition of the building and further construction on the site while maintaining the main facade wall. However, in August 2014, city defenders accidentally discovered that the house, hidden behind a net, was completely destroyed along with the facade wall.
On this fact, the “Moscow City Heritage” instituted administrative proceedings [27] ; the urban development plan of the land plot (GPZU) issued to the owner of the facility, Atlantic Aeronautic Holding Limited, was withdrawn by the city authorities [23] , but later the City Hall issued a new GPZU, allowing the restoration of the demolished building in the previously existing dimensions [28] . During construction, the house marked the beginning of Gorky Street, filling out the borders of the Belorussky Train Station Square. Its number of storeys is eleven floors instead of seven, adopted according to the norm for buildings of the main street of Moscow, was associated with the need to hide from the side of the Belorussky railway station square a view of the massive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral , which stood on Miusskaya Square [35] .
