History

Axel Kirillovich Walden, a Finnish pharmacist, at the age of 25 years old, along with his wife, midwife Selma, arrived in the Far East on the “Emperor Alexander II” brig in 1869. Initially, Walden and his wife lived in the European trading post of Nakhodka Bay, later they moved to Askold Island, where they mined gold. After digging up money, they moved to Vladivostok, having bought a small plot of land in the area of the First River. Askold went into business in a new place and soon returned to his main profession - pharmacy [1] .

Soon, the Walden family moved to the center of Vladivostok. In 1909, Axel Kirillovich began the construction of a house in the eastern half of the 295th plot, which began simultaneously with the reconstruction of the Kachuryants house by the Peterets brothers. Local historian Dmitry Ancha suggests that with a high degree of probability, the house was designed by the architect Georg Junghendel : here, just like in the house of the Peterets brothers, light facing brick and decorative elements made of cement mortar were used. The construction was completed in 1910 [2] .

On the ground floor of Walden's house were a pharmacy and a pharmacy warehouse. On the second and third floors there are expensive well-maintained apartments for rent [2] .

Architecture

The building is three-story, made of brick. It is executed in modernist style. Decorative elements of the southern (main) facade of the building echo the decor of the main facade of the house of V.F. Ugretsova (later - Jungkhendel) on the Chinese street (today - Ocean prospect, 13-A), which was built in 1907-1908 and which housed the Yuenghendel architecture and construction bureau. Two houses (brothers Peterets and Waldena) are close in style and are perceived as a single architectural ensemble, as if created by one author [2] .
