The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute

The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute (from the English - “The Digital Institute of Marina Abramovich ”) is a video game created by the video game developer and designer Pippin Barr in collaboration with the Marina Abramovich Institute in 2013 [1] .

Description

Pippin Barr created a virtual version of the Marina Abramovich Institute (MAI) to digitally reproduce the artist's performance . At The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute, players can watch the submitted works of Marina Abramovich, watching the performance of artists, or participate in new experiments. The developer wrote on his site that this experience will probably not be like much of what you could try before [2] .

Earlier in 2011, Pippin Barr created the video game The Artist is Present , which reproduces one of Marina Abramovich’s most famous performances, “In the Presence of an Artist,” which was held for the first time in 2010 at the New York Museum of Modern Art . The Artist is Present is a holistic modeling of the situation, since the player, like the museum visitors in 2010, is waiting for hours in a virtual line to sit with Marina Abramovich [3] .

Digital MAI is a bit of a virtual analogue of MAI , played as an 8-bit video game. He was part of Marina Abramovich’s campaign to open a real institute for her art form.

After you launch The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute, you must sign a digital contract [4] .

To take part in exercises or games, you need to hold the Shift key on the keyboard for an entire hour. Only then will you be able to play games, the first of which includes “slow walking” with a group of other members of the Marina Abramovich Institute (MAI) —all iconic avatars dressed in white — across the screen. You need to slowly and repeatedly press the right arrow key to move the person. If you go through an hour of exercise, you will be rewarded with digital performance from Marina Abramovich [4] .

Pippin Barr in an interview shared that he “seems strange and interesting to“ open ”a game like this. It really looks like a place on the Internet ” [2] . The developer sought to carefully work out the space so that it seemed almost a real Marina Abramovich Institute [2] .
