Works

Olaf Nikolay is considered one of the leading contemporary artists in Germany. In his works, he touches on a number of conceptual topics, starting with the political and cultural agenda and ending with the problems of human perception. Sometimes he also turns to the topic of aesthetic appropriation of terrestrial nature on the part of human culture [5] .

Memorial to the victims of Nazi military justice, 2014

In several of his works, the artist contrasts the “socialist ideals” with their immediate adversary - the “capitalist market economy”, thereby formulating the ambivalence and contradiction between the aspects of utopia, pragmatism, consumerism and aesthetics [6] .

In 2012, Olaf Nikolai won the competition for the creation of the memorial, which was held by the Vienna City Council. Nicholas presented the draft memorial to the victims of Nazi military justice. On October 24, 2014, the monument was inaugurated by the public; Austrian President Heinz Fischer delivered a speech at the ceremony. The monument itself is a concrete sculpture in the form of the letter X. At the top of the monument, only two words are written from the figured poem of the Scottish poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, consisting of only two words: all (repeated many times) and alone (located in the center of X) [7 ] [8] .
