Biography

Maggie Hambling was born in 1945 in the east of England.

Family

Maggie Hambling has an older sister, Ann, and an older brother, Roger. As Maggie admits, she was always close to her mother, and became close to her father after he retired at 60, then the artist gave him oil paints, and she discovered that her father was a great artist. It was his father and his paintings that inspired Maggie after studying to return to Sudbury, where she now partially resides. [1] She studied with Cedric Morris and Lett Hines at the Ipswich (1962–64) and Cumberwell Schools of the Arts (1964–67), as well as at the Felix Slade School of Fine Arts (1967–69). [2] [3]

Creativity

In addition to sculpture, Maggie Hambling also paints. Among her works are portraits of George Mellie and Max Wall , which are in the National Portrait Gallery of London. Hambling's works are included in the public collections of the British Museum , the Tate Gallery , the London National Gallery and the Galust Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. [four]

Conversation with Oscar Wilde

“Talking with Oscar Wilde,” London.

The sculpture "Conversation with Oscar Wilde" was created in 1998 [5] .

Wilde fans, especially Derek Jarman , first proposed the creation of a memorial in honor of Oscar Wilde in the 1980s. After the death of Derek Jarman in 1994, a committee was created for the earliest appearance of the memorial, led by television producer Jeremy Isaacs and including actors Judy Dench , Sir Ian McKellen and poet Sheimas Heaney . The committee members from the sketches of 12 artists, chose the idea of Hambling. Her design shows Wilde's bronze head rising from a green granite sarcophagus, which also serves as a bench. Wilde's hand held a cigarette. [6] The cigarette was repeatedly seized, it was even called the most frequent act of vandalism in relation to public art in London. Now this part of the sculpture is not replaced. [7] [8]

Sink

The Sink, Oldboro.

The sculpture "Shell" was created as a monument to composer Benjamin Britten in his homeland, in Oldborough .

"Shell" symbolizes the spirit of the music of the composer. Several connected oyster shells, a complex structure made of steel. On the occasion of the centenary of her beloved composer, Maggie Hambling also created a series of “Wall of Water”, consisting of 10 engravings. The prodigal son “The Prodigal Son (Britten's Opera) ” inspired her to this work.

In the summer of 2013, an exhibition was held with this series called “Maggie Hambling. Wall of Water ”in the Hermitage . The exposition was held as part of the “Benjamin Britten Seasons in Russia”. A series of engravings "The Wall of Water" embodies the images of the "Prodigal Son", as well as landscapes from the coast of the North Sea, where the composer lived, and where the "Shell" is located. [9]

"In Britain, Maggie Hambling, who creates ambiguous sculptures in the shape of a bivalve shell, is considered the undisputed supplier of kitsch " [10] . The work "Sink" is referred to by some as plop art . Nevertheless, it was for this sculpture that Maggie Hambling received the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture in 2006. [eleven]

Quotes

There is more time in Suffolk: dawn, morning, noon, afternoon, whiskey time. In London, it all seems condensed. [one]

I never wanted children. I know myself well enough. If I had a painting crying out in one room and a baby crying out in another, I would go to the baby, so I'm very lucky that never happened. [one]
