History

The original collection of the museum was acquired by Eindhoven City Council in 1934 by agreement with Henry van Abbe, a private collector and local cigar manufacturer. In response to the purchase of part of its collection, the Van Abbe factory funded the construction of the museum building, which opened in 1936. It was erected by the architect Alexander Krofoller and is a plan of a symmetrical set of galleries in the traditionalist style. The museum in publications until about 1990 was referred to as the "Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum", after which it received its current name.

As the building ceased to meet modern requirements, a new extension, including a 27-meter tower, was designed by Abel Caen. It was opened in 2003 in the presence of Queen Beatrix .

The museum was visited by 96,750 people in 2011, and 98,100 in 2012 [2] .

Collection

The original collection of the museum included the works of Jan Slaters , Karel Willink and Isaac Israel among other, mostly Dutch and Belgian contemporary works. The museum also acquired other works of art from its founder, Henry van Abbe, until his death in 1940.

The museum's collection was most actively developed under the leadership of Eddie de Wilde and Rudy Fuchs [3] . While Edie de Wilde bought the classic modernist works of Picasso and other artists, Fuchs acquired the works of artists of his generation, in particular conceptual works from American and German painting.

The current director Charles Eshe [4] has expanded the geography of art presented at the museum, focusing on the purchase of works by artists from Central and Eastern Europe, including Nedko Solakov, Mladen Stilinovich , Wilhelm Sasnal, Arthur Zmievsky, as well as video works by Israeli artist Yael Bartana.

Later acquisitions include works by Pablo Picasso , Vasily Kandinsky and Pete Mondrian . The museum is also world famous for having one of the largest collections of works by Lazarus Lissitzky .

The museum also houses a collection of situationalist Jacqueline de Jong posters made in Paris in May 1968.
