Biography

Rev. Dorotheus was a native of Ascalon and spent his early youth with his family in Gaza . He studied secular sciences; perhaps his teacher was Procopius of Gaz . The Dorotheus family was wealthy (in the life of the Monk Dosifei, a student of Abba Dorofei, it is reported that Brother Dorofei built a hospital in the Abba Serida monastery at his own expense). The reasons that prompted Dorotheus to leave the world and go to the monastery are unknown, as well as the age at which he took tonsure . It is known that he did not immediately receive monastic tonsure, but lived for some time next to the monastery, using the means of his large inheritance .

Entering the monastery of St. Seridus, Dorotheus became the cell attendant of St. John the Prophet and was his novice for ten years. His main obedience in the monastery was the reception of wanderers, to whom he showed great patience and zeal. He was the mentor of the Monk Dositheus . Not earlier than 540 , after the death of Hegumen Abba Serida and St. John the Prophet, Dorotheus retired from the hostel of Abba Serida. A possible reason for this was the brotherhood's desire to elect him abbot , which he humbledly refused. Soon, other monks began to settle near Dorotheus, and he founded his own monastery, the rector of which was until his death.
