Radiohead vocalist Tom Yorke first performed a solo version of Lotus Flower at Echoplex in Los Angeles on October 2, 2009 when he toured with his band Atoms for Peace . [one]
Like the rest of the songs from The Kings of Limbs , the song may have been recorded in the house of actress Drew Barrymore . [2] On January 24, 2010, Radiohead suspended recording for a performance at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood to raise funds for Oxfam in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake ; during the performance, York performed the Lotus Flower alone on an acoustic guitar. [3] The show was released free online in December 2010 under the title Radiohead for Haiti . [3]

According to NME , Lotus Flower combines electronic instrumentation for the fourth album of Radiohead Kid A (2000) with the “sonic warmth” of their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007). [4] The song includes [5] York's falsetto , similar to Prince, a jerky rhythm and a powerful bass line with a synthesizer [6] [7] [8] Despite their usual size, pops in five times create metric dissonance. [9]
"Lotus Flower" has a traditional song structure to a greater extent than other songs from the album "The King of Limbs". [10] Luke Lewis from NME called it “the only possible song with a real choir from the album“ The King of Limbs “”. Lewis suggested that the text speaks of transcendence, self-abasement, and "the magic of losing oneself in music and feelings." [4] [6]
Release
The song "Lotus Flower" was released on Radiohead's eighth studio album, The King of Limbs (2011). [11] Although the single was not released as a commercial, it hit the charts, including the UK singles chart, the US Alternative Songs chart and the Billboard Japan Hot 100 .
Remixes of various artists on Lotus Flower were released later that year and were compiled on the TKOL RMX 1234567 remix album . [12]
Criticism
Billboard [13] and The New York Times rated Lotus Flower as the best track from The King of Limbs . [14] AV Club described the song as "a sensually complex phenomenon in order to be a favorite of the dance floor." [15] In the newspaper The Independent it was written that it was “not quite a hymn for singing in a choir”, but “just an empty and mysterious song to withstand various interpretations.” [16] In NME, the song was called “subtle but powerful,” [6] and in the Austin Chronicle, it was called "the main element of modern electro-pop music." [17] The track was nominated for the " Best Rock Performance " and "Best Rock Song " awards at the 54th annual Grammy Awards . [eighteen]
Video clip
Radiohead released a music video for the song Lotus Flower on their YouTube channel on February 18, 2011. [11] The video was directed by Garth Jennings, choreographed by Wayne McGregor, the video includes black-and-white shots with a chaotic dancing York. [19] York said of the creation of the video: “I’m never sure how I look, but I get shocking and catch my eye. Video “Lotus Flower” caused great discomfort, I did everything, but it cracked. I was shown excerpts from the video the next day, and I said: “This is not coming out.” It was like the paparazzi took me naked or something. The video was corrupted. But if there is a risk, then this is probably good. ” [twenty]
By 2013, the video was watched over 20 million times. [20] So the Dancing Tom York Internet meme came up, people replaced the soundtrack in the video clip or edited visual effects, [21] which led to the appearance of the hashtag “#thomdance” on Twitter . [22] York liked this, and he said: “This is a great pleasure. This is what everyone wants. If this is what you have been working on, goes beyond that, then that's great. ” [20]
It was written on the IndieWire website that Jennings turned York's “spasmodic” dance into art so that it became “surprisingly irresistible ... York's convulsive, curious and exciting dance is becoming a major attraction.” [23] The British newspaper Metro praised York's performance, writing the following: “somehow, despite the fact that it looks like a lot of tangled limbs in capture and attack, it works,” but the video was criticized as “meager and small talking about something. " [24] The video was nominated for the Best Music Video Award at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards . [eighteen]
