Creativity

In the works of Schmalz religious, Catholic, motives prevail. Each piece is carefully thought out, sometimes taking as long as 10 years [3] from the idea to the creation of the sculpture. Some of his works are created in series, while others are separate works. Schmalz believes: “If people use my sculptures as a tool for thinking, then I am very happy” [3] . Homeless Jesus has been shown in many places, including St. Peter's Basilica . [4] Pope Francis described the sculpture as “a beautiful work of art” [4] . Schmalz participated in a public discussion: what if the house is inaccessible? at the Indiana Landmark Theater on November 13, 2016. [5] He was one of three people to answer a question moderated by Terry Jett. [6]

Although Schmalz is primarily known for his Homeless Jesus , he also created many other works. On October 23, 2015, the Golden Leaves statue , 4 meters (13 feet ) high , was installed in Orillia in honor of musician Gordon Lightfoot [7] . The statue depicts a young Lightfoot playing a guitar surrounded by a ring of maple leaves. Leaves contain images inspired by his songs. Schmalz plans to create each sheet and place them along the Lightfoot trail in Orillia and make copies that will be placed in places suitable for each song. [8] A leaf inspired by the song Black Day in July was discovered at Tudhope Park on July 10, 2016 as part two in the Gordon Lightfoot Sculpture Park. [9] [10]

Schmalz also created the Canadian Veterans Memorial . He worked out every form of the Canadian Armed Forces and asked families to send photos of family or friends who served in the war. [11]
