The Primate of America is an honorary title created by the papal bull of Pope Pius VII Divinis Praeceptis on November 28, 1816 and ratified by the concordat between the Holy See and the Dominican Republic on June 16, 1954 . The title was bestowed upon the archbishop of Santo Domingo because it is the oldest archdiocese still existing in America .
