Despite the fact that most of the Ramones songs are signed by the names of all members of the group, Dee Dee was the author of most of the lyrics of the group, writing, in particular, the songs “ 53rd & 3rd ”, “Commando”, “ Rockaway Beach ” and “Poison Heart”. He was the bassist of the band from 1974 to 1989 , when he began a short rap career under the name Dee Dee King . In 1989, he released the album “ Standing in the Spotlight ”, which was appreciated by critics (his music was described as “immensely wrapped around the Beastie Boys ”), but he did not achieve commercial success. After some time, Dee Dee went into punk rock again, initially collaborating with Nina Hagen ; at about the same time he moved to the Netherlands .
In the early 90s, Dee Dee assembled Dee Dee Ramone ICLC (with Johnny Cargo, English Johnny Cargo on bass, and Danny Arnold Lommen, English Danny Arnold Lommen , on drums); Dee Dee himself became a vocalist and guitarist. Dee Dee's second solo disc, the heavy punk I Hate Freaks Like You , was released on Rough Trade Records. Only one Ramones song “All Is Quiet On The Eastern Front” ( 1981 ) was recorded here, but many new and very strong songs were recorded (two of them are “Makin 'Monsters For My Friends” and “It's Not For Me To Know "- a year later, the Ramones were re-recorded for the farewell disc" ! Adios Amigos! "). The biggest negative of the disc was Dee Dee's weak vocals. In the seven-year EP The Chinese Bitch , released the same year, Dee Dee, among other things, recorded one of the very first Ramones songs, written back in 1974 - I Don't Wanna Get Involved With You (this song was remade into another - “I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You”).
The second solo LP Dee Dee was noticeably weaker than the first, despite the participation of Mark Ramon and Daniel Ray on the guitar. As a bass player, Dee Dee's girl, Barbara Zampini (who took the pseudonym Barbara Ramon) performed here. Dee Dee's next longplay “ Hop Around ” was closer to the typical Ramones style, with “authentic” texts and even musical quotes from the band’s work. In addition to Dee Dee and Barbara, drummer Billy Rogers and guitarist Chris Spedding participated in the disc.
Dee Dee Ramon was addicted to drugs (including heroin ) from adolescence to the end of his life. In the mid-90s, information appeared that he had quit. In 2002, he died of an overdose of heroin.
