History

Palace during the screening of the musical Les Miserables

Well-known opera producer Richard D'Oilly Carte ordered the construction of the theater in the late 1880s [1] . The project was developed by Thomas Edward Collckatt. Initially, the building was supposed to be the home of the opera. At the opening of the theater was called the "English Royal Opera House". In January 1891, Arthur Sullivan's opera Ivanhoe was staged. Despite the fact that the opera was a success with the audience and 160 performances were staged, the theater did not make a profit. Kart decided to change the concept of the theater and renamed it “Palace Theater” or Palace. This time the theater became musical. The position of manager was taken by Charles Morton [2] . In 1897, the theater began showing films as part of its entertainment program [3] . In 1904, Alfred Butt became the manager of the theater and continued to combine various types of entertainment, including dance numbers and films [4] . From 1900 to 1920, the musical director of the theater was Herman Fink [5] . In 1922, the Marx Brothers appeared in the theater, who were engaged in showing their Broadway shows.
