Musical critic Simon Reynolds described avant-garde funk as “complex dance music ” and a kind of psychedelia in which “oblivion should not have been achieved through elevation above the body, but through immersion in a physical state in which a person lost himself through animalism” [2 ] . Simon Frith described avant-garde funk as applying a progressive rock mentality to rhythm rather than melody and harmony [2] . Some style motifs in the 1970s and 1980s included “ Eurodisk rhythms; synthesizers used to create not pristine, hygienic textures, but poisonous, noisy abominations; Burroughs slicing method applied to found voices ” [2] .
History
Early acts that were retrospectively described with this term include German kraut-rock band Can [4] , American funk performers Sly Stone and George Clinton [5] and jazz trumpeter Miles Davis [6] . According to Reynolds, an innovative wave of avant-garde funk musicians came in the late 1970s [7] when post-punk artists (including Public Image Ltd. , Liquid Liquid and James Chance [8] , as well as Cabaret Voltaire , Talking Heads , The Pop Group , DAF , A Certain Ratio and 23 Skidoo [9] ) began to use black styles of dance music in their music, such as funk and disco [3] . Reynolds noted the concern of these performers with issues such as alienation , repression, and the technocracy of Western modernity [2] . Musicians of the New York know-wave scene of the late 1970s also explored avant-garde funk influenced by figures such as Ornett Coleman [1] .
Soon, bands such as Skinny Puppy , Chakk , 400 Blows began to appear, which represented later waves of style [7] . By the mid-1980s, it had dissipated, and many of its performers became part of the first wave of house music in the UK [9] . Avant-garde funk will continue to influence drum and bass producers of the 1990s, such as 4hero and A Guy Called Gerald. [10]
