Lieutenant General William Stuart (1778–1837) was an officer in the British Army who participated in the Napoleonic Wars [2] .

Biography
William Stewart was born in 1778. He was the third son of Alexander Stuart, 10th Lord Blantyre and Katharina, the eldest daughter and heiress of Patrick Lindsey of Eaglesni, Huddington [2] .
Stuart was appointed ensign in the 1st Guards Regiment in 1794, promoted to lieutenant and captain in 1797. In 1798, he served in Ireland during the Irish uprising with the 3rd battalion. In 1799, he accompanied the battalion in the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland and participated in battles on August 27, September 10, September 19 and October 2. In July 1806, he went to Sicily and returned in January 1808. In 1807 he received the rank of captain and lieutenant colonel. In 1809, he served on an expedition to Walheeren [2] .
After that, Stuart served in the Iberian War and received a medal for the battle of Niva . In 1814, he received the rank of army colonel and was appointed third major of the Grenadier Guard. He was the commander of the 3rd battalion of the 1st Guards Regiment during the Waterloo campaign [2] [3] [4] . He fought at the battle of Katr Bras , in which he was wounded, and may have lost his arm as a result of this wound, although the old label on the back of the picture indicates that he was injured in Waterloo [1] . He was promoted to major general on July 19, 1821, and after a while as lieutenant generals [1] .
Stewart was not married and died on February 15, 1837 in Erskine House, Renfrewshire , aged 58 years [2] .
