Biography
Born in a cantor family. Since childhood, he sang in a church choir in Prague. Received home primary music education. Later he studied music under the leadership of J. Kreichi and K.F. Peach .
He led a number of choral groups. From 1862 he was a choirmaster , then in 1864-1865 he was the second conductor of the Provisional Theater in Prague, sometimes acting as a singer, conductor of the German Opera House in Olomouc (1865-1866), conductor (1868-1876) and chief conductor (1876-18 1900) Opera company of the National Theater in Prague.
A special place in A. Chekh's repertoire was occupied by the works of B. Smetana (he directed the first production of the opera “Libushe” in Vienna in 1892; the first performance of the symphonic cycle “My Homeland” (1882); the cycle of all operas by A. Dvořák (1893, the highest A. Cech's achievement as a conductor was the performance of B. Smetana (1892) at the Vienna theater exhibition of the opera “ Sold Bride ”; he successfully staged A. Dvořák and “The Devil and Kach ” (1899) at the National Opera House (1889) . , “The Messinian Bride” (1884) and “Sharka” (1897) by Z. Fibich , and also R. Wagner's “Lohengrin” (1885).
For several years, A. Cech directed the popular symphony concerts organized by the Umeleck Talk music society, the so-called Slavic concerts in Prague, etc.
A. Čech was the first performer and propagandist of many new works by young Czech composers. He was the first in Bohemia to perform the works of J. Offenbach (The Robbers, The Trebizond Princess, The Snow Ball, The Poachers, The Blue Beard, The Beautiful Elena), I. Strauss (Cagliostro in Vienna, " The Bat ”, R. Wagner ( “ Lohengrin ” ,“ Nuremberg Mastersingers ”), two operas by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky .
He was distinguished by a lively artistic temperament, special thoroughness and conscientiousness in preparing works for execution; however, A. Cech's interpretations were not original.
He is the author of 9 musical plays, a number of piano compositions, music for dramatic performances, as well as several articles on conducting art and memoirs.
